WFO unveils first recycled plastic shelter
Waste Free Oceans and Italian non-profit waste management body, Corepla, have unveiled a humanitarian shelter prototype, using plastic waste collected along the river Po in Italy.
Plastic waste collected with experimental polyethylene barriers in the river Po, were recycled by Corepla and then sent to the Storm Board plant of the UK group Protomax Plastics to produce boards for the shelter.
Protomax specialises in the production of recycled plastic panels that are mainly used in the constructions sector.
The shelter, which was unveiled during the Ecomondo environmental fair in Rimini, Italy, earlier this month, has now been disassembled and sent to Athens, Greece to serve as a demo project for refugees in the country.
The concept is to manage part of the refugees’ plastic waste in order to produce recycled panels for emergency shelters or any other useful structures suitable to their needs.
