Basque Declaration to be presented at Urban Future Conference

ICLEI Regional Director, Wolfgang Teubner, will deliver a presentation on the Basque Declaration and introduce the Transformative Action Award at the upcoming Urban Future Conference in Vienna (Austria), which is taking place from 28 February - 2 March.

The Urban Future Conference is the world's largest meeting point of "City Changers": people who strive to make their cities more sustainable. The 2018 conference will bring together over 3,000 mayors, architects, mobility experts, city planners, scientists and sustainability managers from across the world to discuss key sustainability issues.

Mr Teubner will give his presentation on 28 February during the session: "˜Inside the Climate Agreements: Should they matter to cities?'. Copies of the Basque Declaration will be available in both English and German at the conference information stand.

The ESDW is a Europe-wide initiative to stimulate and make visible activities, projects and events that promote sustainable development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Last year's ESDW saw over 4,000 registered events that spanned 30 European countries and attracted an estimated 360,000 participants.

Building on the success of the previous editions, this year's ESDW will again focus on events and activities linked to the SDGs in an effort to raise more awareness and support for them. A particular emphasis will be placed on the SDGs that will be covered by the UN's High Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2018, which takes place from 9 - 18 July 2018 in New York (USA).

The theme of this year's HLPF is "˜Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies', and will address SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all; SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns; SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss; and SDG 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
