Large-diameter metal matrix composite lattice truss sandwich cylinder: Additive manufacturing, testing and analyzing
Large-scale additively manufactured (AM) metal matrix composite (MMC) lattice truss sandwich cylinders (LTSCs) have impending application in launch vehicle systems as ultra-light load-carrying structures capable of realizing one-piece molding and facilitating multi-function. The critical load of the cylinders, which are interstage structures that are greatly affected by buckling mode, is the most important indicator in the design phase. This paper describes the design, fabrication, testing and analyses of a metallic AM LTSC. To predict the failure load and pattern of the LTSC, an elastoplastic multi-failure analyzing method is proposed. The results give insights in the practical application of large-scale AM LTSCs in aerospace engineering when compared to widely studied carbon fiber reinforced composite LTSCs.
