Facile synthesis of hydroxyl aluminum oxalate based on the hydrothermal reaction of boehmite and oxalic acid

The preparation of hydroxyl aluminum oxalate (HAO) employing the facile hydrothermal reaction of boehmite (?-AlOOH) and oxalic acid is reported in this work for the first time. The high purity HAO with rhombic shape was successfully prepared at 200??C for 8?h. The synthesized HAO started thermal decomposition at about 360??C and the mass loss was up to 52%, both higher than that of aluminum hydroxide. The formation mechanism of the HAO had also been investigated in detail. In general, the formation process of HAO can be summarized as two steps, namely adsorption and reaction. The rhombic-shaped ?-Al2O3 was fabricated by calcining the HAO at 450??C for 2?h, inheriting the size and morphology of the HAO during the thermal decomposition process.
