7 Mechanical engineering

Due to often intense levels of radiation, many of the nuclear industry's mechanical handling operations are conducted inside heavily shielded concrete structures, known as caves (UK) or canyons (USA). This chapter describes the equipment that is deployed in and around these inaccessible environments, from shielding windows, which allow operators to safely view the scene, to manipulators that can mimic an operator's hand movements. It covers the decontamination processes which are employed to remove radioactive materials, and the substantial shield doors which segregate highly radioactive environments from adjacent areas which may be occupied by maintenance personnel. In addition, the chapter describes the various types of heavily shielded steel flasks that are used to carry radioactive materials across nuclear sites and also the highly robust types which are employed to transport materials in the public domain beyond a nuclear site's boundaries.
