New energy management tool to reduce energy consumption in city buildings

Cities and building energy managers are to benefit from an advanced ICT tool that is able to devise short-term energy optimisation strategies both at a building and city level. This innovative solution, named OPTIMUS Decision Support System (DSS), is the outcome of a three-year EU-funded project, and will be showcased at the project's final conference, taking place in Athens, Greece, on 21 September.

The OPTIMUS DSS is designed to support those managing building operations in achieving significant reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The tool analyses different data and generates short-term energy optimisation strategies, with their related impacts. Users can compare these plans and select the most suitable one based on their current priorities.

The tool was tested in three cities: Sant Cugat (Spain), Savona (Italy) and Zaanstad (The Netherlands). The city experiences with OPTIMUS DSS will be presented at the final project conference, together with presentations from eminent speakers specialised in energy management. Participation in this event is free.

In Reykjavàk all electricity is produced with hydroelectric power and houses are geothermally heated. Transport is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions and is the largest challenge for the city.

In the city's Municipal Plan 2010-2030 the goal is to change travel modes so that the share of public transport will rise from 4 percent to 12 percent and the ratio of pedestrians and cyclists will rise from 19 percent to over 30 percent by 2030.

"Cities play a key role in the fight against climate change. They can react quickly and have many possibilities of enacting change," said Dagur B. Eggertsson, Mayor of Reykjavàk. The Mayor added that the Icelandic capital is in a prime position to meet its highly ambitious target thanks to its abundant renewable energy sources.
