Chapter 10 Business Networks in Thailand

The socioeconomic development in Thailand characterizes postdevelopmental capitalism, which is private-sector led. This chapter describes the characteristics of the Thai business networks, the relationship between the government and business, and some organizations that have played a significant role in the economy. The first section describes the development of the Thai business networks from the beginning of the industrialization of Thailand during the 1960s until the current expansion of business into ASEAN in the 2010s. The second section explains the development and building up of business networks in expanding into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The third section reviews the Government investment policy (ie, Board of Investment Regulations) and other relevant business laws. In the fourth section, we briefly discuss the current anticorruption movement of the private business sector and business ethics issues. Finally, we suggest how the Thai business networks can be further developed within the AEC and in the globalization era.
