Chapter 7 Chemistry, Microbiology and Biology of Water

In six parts, this chapter discusses the parameters and standards for chemical, microbiological and biological quality of water supplied for public consumption together with commentary on levels of monitoring and associated analytical requirements. Parts I and II describe the 50 chemical and physical parameters that constitute a risk to human health, impact the aesthetic quality of the water supplied or treatment processes. Parts III and IV review the microbiology of water and the most common waterborne diseases and water biology; the significance of macroorganisms on water quality, respectively. Part V introduces the emerging chemical and microbiological parameters including disinfection, household and industrial by-products, pesticides, enteroviruses and potential future contaminants related to waste and rainwater recycling and climate change. Part VI discusses Drinking Water Safety Plans, the World Health Organization's approach to assessing and managing the risks to the quality of water supplies from source to tap.
