Some Richmond, Virginia residents object to new recycling carts
The Voice, Clinton, Michigan, reports that some residents of Richmond, Virginia, are questioning the city council's decision to buy new, 64-gallon recycling bins provided by Houston-based Waste Management.
Mayor Tim Rix said at a recent city council meeting that citizens have called asking about the cost of the bins and if it was possible to return them, the article says.
According to The Voice, "It did not cost the city anything," Town Manager Jon Moore said at the meeting. "In fact, it kept the cost from this year's contract down. Normally, we have a 2, 3 or 5 percent increase every year. This year, we did not get an increase in cost due to going to the ?every-other-week' recycling."
Officials added that residents were welcome to continue to use the smaller bins or to dispose of them in the new bins if they want to participate in the new program, according to the article.
The new bins' arrival is a result of the new, five-year contract the Richmond City Council signed with Waste Management, which came into effect July 1, 2016.
