Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) announced today to extend their collaboration. After the start on Cyber Security in 2015, both parties decided to collaborate also on Smart Mobility solutions. The collaboration was formalized today by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties.

The MoU was signed in Singapore by Professor Theng Yin Leng, Research Director at the Research Strategy and Coordination Unit (President's Office), NTU Singapore,  and Mr. Paul de Krom, Chief Executive Officer, TNO. The signing ceremony was witnessed by deputy head of mission of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Hans Akerboom. The MoU signing was part of a joint executive mission to Singapore focused on Cyber Security and Urbanisation.

Towards a Smart Nation Singapore

Singapore has expressed its ambitions to become the world's first Smart Nation. Smart Mobility solutions are a key element in this strategy, leading to less congestion, a reduction of emissions and safer roads. TNO achieved a European leading position in Smart Mobility solutions; it established the largest Connected Vehicles (V2X) testbed in Europe (2009), leading to the first connected automated passenger car platooning test on a public road (2012) and the first live truck platooning demonstrations (2015).

On the other hand, NTU is also Singapore's largest Smart Mobility test bed for V2X technologies, which was launched last year in partnership with NXP Semiconductors, a technology leader in secure connected cars headquartered in the Netherlands. TNO's track record combined with NTU, creates a strong proposition for the realisation of Singapore's Smart Nation ambitions.Furthermore, this extended partnership will accelerate Smart Mobility innovations and expects to create significant business opportunities for both countries.

Next step after Cyber Security

A first MoU between NTU and TNO was signed in 2015 and focused on Cyber Security. First results are achieved to develop a Cyber Resilient Nation and solutions for law enforcement to combat cybercrime. Technologies to improve detection of targeted cyber-attacks, to collaborate on cyber threat intelligence and to improve attack and threat attribution were demonstrated in April 2016.  Given the experienced mutual benefits and successful collaboration between the two organizations, this new MoU is another important step forward to strengthen this partnership with a broader perspective.
