Portuguese city of Guimarà£es set to join ICLEI

To build on and improve its sustainability actions, the city of Guimarà£es (Portugal) has announced its intention to become an ICLEI Member. The city recently held a series of activities showcasing its work in the field of sustainability. The Guimarà£es "˜Green Weekend' saw workshops, scientific presentations, and music all geared towards impressing on citizens the importance of environmental stewardship.

Event-goers had the opportunity to travel in the first Portuguese electric bus, use the city cable car and join in a cycling chic tour. Separate tours were held to show how the city is adapting to the challenges posed by climate change, with a particular focus on Guimarà£es' sustainable water programme. Nature and biodiversity, recycling, and energy efficiency were also discussed as part of the weekend's festivities.

Citizens were additionally invited to suggest how public spaces can be used in a sustainable way that enhances life in the city. The Portuguese city is hoping that its progress in becoming more sustainable will help it to become the European Green Capital, joining other sustainable exemplars such as Ljubljana (Slovenia), Bristol (United Kingdom) and Copenhagen (Denmark).
