Pirelli: Committed to safety on the roads through UN fund
NEW YORK CITY—Since the Italian tire manufacturer joined the United Nations Road Safety Fund initiative in 2018, Pirelli and C. S.p.A. has donated more than $800,000 to the fund.
Now, with its Cyber Tire, Seal Inside and Run Flat products, the company is reaffirming its commitment to the UNRSF, the company said July 6.
"Pirelli has been a supporter and donor of the UNRSF since its foundation and was among the first companies of the automotive sector to join," said Marco Tronchetti Provera, executive vice chairman and CEO of Pirelli. "Our focus is to constantly improve the safety of our tires through technological innovation.
"Belonging to the fund allows us to support global initiatives in areas from infrastructure to urban planning and prevention. That is why the relationship with the UNRSF is such a natural fit and one that we will continue to support."
Pirelli's sensor-fitted tire, known as the Cyber Tire, transmits information in real time to assist with driving safety. In addition, the company has seen innovations in the puncture space with its Run Flat and Seal Inside tires, which allow a driver to continue to drive even with a rapid loss in tire inflation pressure.
"With donor support and the leadership of the UNRSF, we can achieve ambitious results and make concrete contributions to the U.N. Sustainable Development Goal of halving road traffic deaths and injuries by the end of the decade," said Filippo Bettini, Pirelli's sustainability and future mobility officer and member of the UNRSF advisory board.
Pirelli said it has instituted an eco-friendly approach to safety by adding virtual systems in the development process, reducing environmental impacts.
"This approach underpins our efforts to have over 90 percent of our new products in either Class A or B, according to EU tire labeling criteria, for wet braking; and at the same time 70 percent in class A and B for rolling resistance by 2025," Pirelli said.
