LIFE FUTURE – Boosting the sustainability in cities
LIFE FUTURE is a 2.5 year European project that started in 2015, co-funded with support from the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union. It is led by a consortium of 6 partners representing both public authorities and research institutes. The partners are:
- AIMPLAS
- ACR+
- AIJU
- InnDEA Foundation
- City of Koprivnica
- Universitat Jaume I
LIFE FUTURE aims to promote green public procurement, focusing on urban furniture. The objective is to overcome the difficulties encountered by procurers when including environmental clauses in calls for tenders and assessing the offers received. To achieve this objective, an online tool will be developed and validated during the project: the Green Urban Furniture Tool (GUF Tool).
The GUF Tool will guide public authorities throughout the whole tender process, thanks to a simplified environmental analysis of urban furniture (materials, processes and end of life options) and the definition of critical aspects to take into account. Urban furniture manufacturers and suppliers will also be able to use the GUF Tool to assess the environmental performances of their products. Results obtained from the tool will be an asset for manufacturers and suppliers replying to public tenders, helping them to meet the requirements established by public authorities.
During the project the GUF Tool will be validated through a real public procurement made by the cities of Koprivnica and Valencia to buy at least 200 urban furniture products. Workshops will also be organised in Spain and Croatia for local authorities to provide information on green public procurement and how to use the GUF tool. It is expected that by 2023, approximately 17,500 products will be acquired with the support of the tool.
The project aims to reduce the environmental impact of urban furniture purchased by public bodies by 26.5% of CO2 equivalent emissions, 15.5% of energy consumption and 10.8% of waste generation.
